I am a new owner of a used R-Pod.  I'm wondering if there is a way to operate the slide manually, in case the button doesn't work for some reason.

Not sure which model you have, but I had a 179 and one of the slide motors failed. The only way to open and close the slide is to remove the bolt that secures the slide motor to the body of the Rpod, slide the motor out of the way(has to be done on both sides of the slide) and pull the slide open and then push to close. There are a couple of YouTube videos with the step by step process.
