I am trying to replace the lower propane hose from the regulator output to the main propane line under the pod. The regulator output end is a 3/8" male NPT thread. the other end appears to be 1/2" female fitting. Etrailer lists similar hoses with a 1/2" female SAE swivel fitting and 1/2"female flare swivel thread. does anyone know which thread is correct? Thanks Vann

Hi Vann, I just checked my hose that is on a January built 2011 177. The regulator output side is 3/8" male NPT and the other end is 1/2" female SAE with a swivel fitting. Have you pulled off your line to verify? *****updated !! other end is 1/2" female NPT with swivel fitting. Sorry for the confusion. ***** I just changed this line out 2 years ago as my fridge wouldn't work. Found out both the regulator and this line were full of a black oily gooey substance. Replaced both and was back in business.

Thanks JATO that is exactly what I am doing-replacing and cleaning both lines. The upper hose is easy-Acme nut x 1/4"npt male. The lower hose is the question. Our pod is a 2015 179, but I would assume(bad ) that they are the same. I have removed the lines, but wasn't sure about the 1/2" female swivel-it is flared, but is it NPT or SAE . ETrailer shows both, so I was hoping to know for sure prior to ordering-saves a return and lost time. I guess that I will have to order one and see what fits. I don't know how much difference there is between the SAE vs NPT thread, but it will become clear when the correct thread fits and has no leaks. thaks for your advice travel safe Vann

I just found this: "NPT is a standard for threaded pipe and fittings. NPT stands for national pipe thread. NPT fittings are tapered thread fitting and usually rely on mechanical deformation in between the male and female fittings to create a seal in addition with Teflon tape. Over tighteting may result in a leakage SAE O-ring fittings are straight fittings and rely on the O-ring to create the seal rather than deformation as in NPT fittings. Since these fittings do not depend on deformation chances of a broken fitting are virtually eliminated." so, I guess the easiest way to determine which type of fitting is appropriate is to see if there is an O ring or not. If there is an O ring, it is SAE, if no O ring and teflon(yellow) tape is present, then it is NPT. the journey continues.............. Vann |

Yes, you are spot on. HOWEVER, hopefully FR stayed with a winner with the SAE fitting on your hose. Golf course equipment years ago 1970's - 1980's were almost always NPT with the flared ends, it also resulted in a LOT of hydraulic leaks where you didn't want them, greens, tees, and fairways. Toro started using SAE exclusively on their turf equipment during the mid 1990's - vast improvement. As you stated 'virtually eliminating' broken fittings/leaks. Too bad FR didn't do the same here, having SAE fittings on both ends of the hose. But I suppose that would add a couple bucks to the bottom line and Warren Buffet wouldn't like that!

I looked at my fittings-neither the hose end nor the pod end had O rings-both had teflon tape. so, I think mine (2015 179) must be the swivel fitting and NOT SAE since there was no o ring on either piece. So, does yours definitely have an O ring? if so, is it on the end of the 1/2" hose fitting or on the male end at the pod main line? thanks again Vann

I owe you an apology. Just went out and removed the line which I thought was SAE, it is not, both ends are NPT. Out in the barn where my 177 is currently sitting I had a couple hoses laying on top of my propane tank and I thought one of them (being a 1/2" line) was an extra for the pod; it wasn't. Actually they both belong to my log splitter. So brain fart on my end, please accept my apology.

No problem, just glad we got it figured out correctly.
I ordered the correct one from a..zon because etrailer is back ordered until March,2022! I don’t like the one I ordered because it is not heavy duty. I will continue to look for one, but the availability seems limited so far. At least now I know I am looking for a 3’ hose with 3/8” male npt and 1/2” female flair fitting. Thanks for the info Travel safe Vann

When I got my hose I went to a local propane dealer who sells bulk propane to homeowners. They can make any length hose and fittings you desire.
