Like StephenH, I'm accumulating knowledge for a future trip up to Alaska. One thing I don't know is the max distance between gas stations. In the Nevada outback, stations are relatively rare, but I can make it from one to another without carrying supplemental fuel. Is it required for the Alcan Hwy? How about others? |

I also am planning a road trip for this next year which will include going to Alaska. I plan on leaving my trailer in Fairbanks and just driving my car the 500 miles up to Prudhoe Bay. I have driven from Fairbanks to the Artic Circle several years ago. Without the trailer in tow I can go 500+ miles on a tank of gas so driving to Prudhoe is no big deal. All total my trip will be about 15,000 miles or so. I will be going as far south as you can in the US (Key West) and farther east than the US (Sydney Nova Scotia). Hopefully the Canadian border will be open by next spring.

The only time I went up the Alcan was at 10,000 feet in a private aircraft. I know the distances between fuel stops are pretty long for some aircraft. I have no idea about gas stations.
It would be for a trip like this that I would want my 36 gallon gas tank.

Yeah I'm glad my Dodge Durango has a 26 gal gas tank. Even towing the RPod I can go almost 400 miles.

Did the trip last summer, there are plenty of gas stations if you run on the top 1/2 of the tank. Our equipment listed in the signature.
It's a great trip. We left Wisconsin May 19th and returned July 7th. 9,000 miles. Favorite cities were Seward Alaska and Dawson City Yukon. Most private campgrounds have washing machines. We only made reservations for Denali while in Fairbanks and on the way back since Canada Day is July 1st.

Have you considered the Milepost (www.themilepost.com). It is an annual book delineating mile by mile vistas, services, history, etc. It designates which services are available including gas and diesel along the roads. I have the 2018 printed version and it seems that diesel was available every 250 miles or less and gas more often. There is an Internet version but I don't know how often the information is updated. If I was going to Alaska I would want the latest version, especially after what 2020 has been like.

Thanks for the tip! I did pick up an older copy of The Milepost and it is a great resource. I figured I'd wait until my trip was imminent to get the latest edition. Good to know about the station spacing. Is that indicated on the maps? I haven't looked that closely. |

I am hoping we can make that trip next year as well. Maybe there are others who would like to team up and go also.

I was about to as we traveled westward through upper USA and thought of Alaska. I was talked out of it as racking north to the Arctic Sea and running through the Canadian Rockies is a shorter run and so much to enjoy in such shorter spaces/miles.
Hey I do get it! Going the distance to Alaska is a Goal. I just have to say.. for the time spent to do so, and the time spent in the Northeast Territories and BC as we worked through.. I'm just not so sure of the lure of the route to Alaska. I may take a boat tour at some point. Drive there... not so much as I have seen so much in the foreground of what it could have been.. My two cents. Research some more. The Canadian Rockies up into The Northwest territories is amazing and not as much mileage. Consider this the up & coming thing vs. Alaska. In a couple years you'll all catch up and talk about it as a new adventure. After Newfounland deeper. After Hudson Bay. I'll be back to this to explore deeper. Alaska will wait, if ever... Just me. |

We went to Alaska in 2018-but not with our Pod. We took a cruise from Vancouver up the inside passage to Whittier. Once we got to Alaska, we rented a Toyota van and drove around for a month. Once you get to Alaska, it is pretty "normal" as to gas, camping, groceries, amenities, etc. Lots of camping areas, lots of natural places and things to do. It was a great trip.It is really big-lots of miles between places. I would love to go back-with or without the pod. Vann
