    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 at 6:04pm
I am leaving tomorrow for a trip so I plugged in shore power and turned on fridge to cool down overnight. I have no battery and don't use the gas. The LED shows the fridge on battery . When I change the mode to shore power I get a red warning light. I get the same light on the gas setting. Strange thing is I can hear the fridge operating with the battery symbol lit. Could use some help please. Thanks

You have no battery? What is running your 12V control board? I think you may want to furnish a battery.

If the trailer is plugged into shore power then it will supply voltage to the 12v circuits, including the fridge. The question is, would the voltage be stable enough to keep the fridge controls operating correctly. I don’t know, never tried.

I suggest you install a battery and see if that fixes your problem. You need a battery anyway to operate your breakaway trailer brake circuit, even if you stay on shore power all the time.

During this test was your trailer plugged in to your tow vehicle?

Sounds to me like there is 12v being supplied by the tow vehicle, enough to to run some circuits at minimal level, AND the fridge is NOT being supplied by shore power properly, possibly a circuit breaker has tripped or maybe its unplugged behind the vent.

I think you need a  battery to make things work right with a stable voltage..

The refrigerator needs a 12 supply to run the control circuit board and lights.

More importantly, the brakes also need a battery if the emergency break away is activated.  No power, no emergency brakes.

Like everyone said above definitely install a battery to at least have the braking system work if ever needed.  I went cheap and bought a new deep cycle lead acid battery from Auto Zone for less than $100 since we exclusively camp in campgrounds.  You don't have to pay the core charge if you trade in a similar dead battery (car, RV or boat works, as long as it is similar).  I also bought a disconnect switch off of Amazon for $30 that attaches to the negative terminal and eliminates battery drain when it is flipped up.  Pretty nice to have.
