Topic: Soon to be r-pod owner Posted: 20 Sep 2020 at 7:56pm |
Hello everyone my name is Kaye and we are looking at trading our current travel trailer to an r-pod. We are a family of four , me my husband and our 2 kids ages 8 and 3 . Our 3 yr old still sleeps with us (**embarrassed**) . Was wondering if you all could give me an input on the rpod 180 ? Thinking of just bringing a folding camping cot for the other kid whoever wants to sleep on the dinette when the time comes that my 3 yr old is ready . I was originally wanting either the 189 or 190 but the dealer closest to us has the 180 and states that a lot of times the 189 and 190 are ordered already by buyers before they even reach the lot .

Welcome.
If you try to put up a cot in an rPod you won't be able to move in there. Not only would it be miserable but it would be unsafe too.
My recommendation is to get the trailer you really want and that won't compromise your future needs, not just what's sitting on the lot at any given moment. The sales guy is going to try to tell you not to wait, its his job to sell what's on the lot. It's nearing the end of the season now anyway so why not stick with what you have for this year, order or shop around for what you want for next year?
You might also want to look at a 176 which has bunk beds, might be better for the two boys.

Karen, you would probably be much happier with a bunkhouse trailer. There are plenty in the market. If you wait until around November you will find a good selection at much better prices as dealers try to clear out their inventory before the doldrums of winter. The bunkhouse trailers are set up for 4 (not counting the dinette, which is a hassle) and you will find it much more comfortable. There are bunkhouse trailers in the 22' range and in the same weight class as many of the rPods. If you prefer a FR product, the Sonoma 1670BH and the 1971BH both ones you may want to consider.

Welcome! I agree with Offgrid and Lostagain - the bunkhouse is a good safe option. That cot, mattress on the floor will get old quickly in an Rpod.
If you can wait, do it. I don't know what part of WA you are in, but prices come down and availability goes up, not just on the sales lots, but also on Craigslist and local for sale by owner sources. We bought our first one in Aug with limited choices and by mid-Oct found out we had overpaid and missed better units.

All of the above is good advice in a normal, typical, RV market...but...the RV market is not 'normal' right now. There might not be any 'clearance sales' or bargains to be had.
Normally the sales person will be highly motivated to move what he has on the lot, but in the present market, lots of arriving units are already presold.
You may have to order the one you really want and might have to wait a few months to get it.
The tight situation reminds me of buying and selling Harleys back in the 1990's and early 2000's...its a seller's market.

In southern/warmer climates where the camping season is much longer, or never stops, the market stays more active during the winter and big price reductions may not be as common, but in the colder climates, the market tends to be more seasonal. In warmer climates, the market is driven more by supply as demand tends to be relatively constant, while in the north demand may fluctuate more seasonally, leaving dealers with excess inventory.
As long as one is flexible, there will be plenty to choose from in the new and used markets toward the end of the year. As for normal times, we may never see "normal" times in our lifetimes, so we may as well not wait for them to return.

If I was looking to buy soon, and I was going to spend a fair amount of money, I'd be tempted to check out the RV show in Quartzsite in January. Lots of 'show specials' on the lots in mid-to-late January.

Quartzsite is a long ways from WA. We didn't see any 'deals' there on travel trailers we were looking for. BUT there were some great deals on accessories and installations.

But please keep in mind that AZ has the 5th highest rate of infections per capita in the country for SARS-CoV-2, so be sure to wear a mask, wash your hands frequently, be very careful. There may be some super deals there, but not at the cost of getting this awful disease.
