FYI:  I'm currently towing with a 2010 Escape, and I just had work done on the transmission - with less than 16,000 miles on the car - I'M NOT A HAPPY CAMPER!!  The front drive axle had to be removed and the following parts had to be replaced:  a bushing, multiple supercessions(?), shaft-front axle, and differential oil seal.   This problem did not happen while towing.  I found fluid dripping on my garage floor, and took it in, thinking it was a loose oil filter or oil pan plug, since I'd just had it in for an oil change the week before.

The service guy said they've been getting service alerts on the Escapes for this problem - great.....

I'm towing within my limits, both weight of trailer and hitch weight.  Apparently, the Escape isn't up to the job.  Escapes that don't tow are even having this problem.  Grrrrrrr.......

Looks like I may be searching for a new tow vehicle and take a beating on my trade in...Cry

Sounds like warranty work.  Have you read anything on how the vehicle is after it's fixed?   If they are still having this issue after the repairs then yeah you'll definitely want to get a different tow vehicle.   Also, check your state laws, you may be entitled to an exchange under a lemon law in which case you won't get worked over with a trade in.

Wow...sorry to hear about your problems!  I second what Runnebane writes.  I do feel your pain however, as last year (11-09) I traded in my PAID for 2008 GMC Canyon with 13,000 miles, as it just wasn't up to the task of towing.  While I was not having problems with it, I've been tinkering around cars long enough to know that it wasn't going to live long, as hard as it was having to work.

On the up side, I think vehicle sales are still kind of slow and you may benefit from this.  But, it will still hurt! Cry

It was covered under the warranty, but that's not my beef.  I'm worried that it will happen again.  The lemon law won't kick in unless I have repeated problems of the same nature; even then, it's hard to get compensated.  I once had a Ford F250 6.0L engine (a complete DOG of an engine, BTW), that was in the shop on average of once a month or so - never got compensated for that one - finally traded it in.
 
I think I'm cured of Ford now.

   Hopefully it may not be that bad once they fix it. It could of been a bad seal , bearing or something. There may be a recall and a redesign of a part could fix the problem. My own personal feeling is a front wheel drive is not as reliable as a rear wheel drive for towing that was the reason we changed tow vehicles from a Saturn Vue FWD to a Jeep Liberty RWD. I could be wrong and front wheel drives are fine. The engineers who design them say they can tow the capacities there given, maybe I didn"t have enough faith.     David and Danette

In early June, I received a recall notice concerning the transmission in my 2008 Tribute.  I was told that a  crack could form at the transmission cooler where the lines attach.  Sure enough, mine had developed a very, very, very minor leak.  It took the dealer about 90 minutes to drain the tranny fluid, replace the parts, refill and send me on my way.

If this had gone further, it could have caused cooling problems and failures.  Fortunately for me, the recall notice came before any damage occurred (or even a mess on the garage floor).

I have been content using my Tribute as a tow vehicle and plan to continue using it.  I certainly have no specific complaints about the transmission.  Yes, more power would be nice; but based on my experience towing my r-pod over the past two camping seasons, the vehicle does just fine.
