I have a 2013 177 and before I winterized it last Fall I discovered an issue with the AC.  It was working fine, then the next day it started with a loud knocking sound then tripped the circuit breaker on the shore power it was connected to.   I tried to fiddle with it and checked it again the next day, same result.   This is a Dometic unit.  I'm fearful it may be seriously broken.  Googling didn't reveal an obvious solution.

So... anyone know what might be wrong and if it is fixable?

Any advice on getting a repair done if it's something I can't fix myself?  (I assume just any RV place I can find, but I've had mixed experiences on that.)

And, if I do have to replace, should I get a different brand/unit?  I've heard some chatter that other brands are quieter.

Ottr,

First I would remove cover, have an assistance turn on AC, and determine area of noise. I am not familiar with this problem. But first I want to isolate where it's at.

+1 to mcarter. Focus on determining if the sound is coming from the compressor or not. That is the most expensive place for the noise to come from, but unfortunately the most likely place for a knocking type sound.

Now that the a/c has been off for a long time the refrigerant pressure might be equalized across the compressor and the noise and circuit trip might not occur the first time you turn it on. If so, wait until it cycles off and then on again and see what happens.
