LOL! I didn't mean to sound dismissive of those states, as I'm sure they have some great things to do and see. However, I have traversed those states a couple of times, and all I remember was corn and cattle.

What's your interest? I would think that Nebraska & Kansas don't have a lot of things to see unless you have relatives there.
South Dakota and Wyoming both have lots of things to see & stay, but you have to traverse Neb. & Kansas.
The southern route through New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah also has a bunch of interesting places. I just would not want to take that route in the summer time.

I've been through S Dakota once, only had time to stop and see Rushmore. Would like to see thunderstorms in the Badlands. Ultimate destination is the Dark Sky reserve in Idaho, what else should I put on the list of places to see?

That was my suggestion, with the possible exception of going through KC. I don't see a handy back road way of getting to SD without touching KC.

P.S....
I know it's quicker, but I really dislike interstates. 😎

The most direct routes would be through KC or Denver, but I would consider that pretty blah. More interesting (to me) would be to start up through KC and then to South Dakota. That would give you the chance to see the Badlands, Black Hills, and Thunder Basin.
Let us know what you decide. Sounds like it could be fun!

I'm planning to take all of my vacation time at once next year, and spend the month of June with my wife traveling. We live in Northeast Arkansas, and my plan is to loop out to the Sawtooth Mountains in Idaho and back, boondocking as much as possible. I've been out west, but never to Idaho. To be honest, I'm scoping out where I want to retire 😀. Any suggestions and/or hints?
