If you have screens on the openings to keep critters out, then leaving the anode rod out might not be so bad. Even thought I did install screens, I also put mine back in after flushing out the tank but I put new Teflon tape on and tighten it. It saves a step in the Spring.

I put a pipe plug in the anode hole. Reinstall anode rod start of season.

One of my first mods was to put screens on the vents of the water heater cover to keep those pesky mud daubers out. For those who live in parts of the country that don't have to deal with these wasps feel blessed!
