Topic: Recommended foam mattress upgrade? Posted: 27 Oct 2018 at 10:39am |
Great Dave and Donna, thanks for the recommendation. And free Amazon Prime shipping.... I think that just about makes my mind up!
I'm going to be installing an inverter, lithium battery, and some other electronic gear under the bed in the difficult to access area toward the front of the under bed storage in the 179. So, I'll be having to get in there pretty regularly at least at first until I get everything sorted and working right. I'll have to work out a way to roll up the mattress and weight it down. I know from our home mattress that its kind of like trying to push up a rope the way the foam flops around.

We bought the 8" Zinus from Amazon this summer & love it. It wasn't hard to pull off for winterizing either!

Don't know the weight of the 6" Eurotop but for me it hasn't been a big deal to flip it up so I can get to the 3way valves twice a year to bypass the HWH. I cut a hole big enough to get my hand in to turn the valves, much easier than being a contortionist and trying to get to it from the rear storage compartment.

Greetings: The mattress that comes with it is a piece of crap. I travel by myself, so I put in a twin innerspring and put a shelf behind it for my stereo system and storage. I can flip the mattress up to put in the sheets. I tried a Denver mattress first and hated it.

For sure memory foam mattresses are cool to watch open up, just hard to move later. That causes me some concern as its essential to be able to get in there to work on the appliances and systems under the bed. And being a 179 I also have the tongue weight issue.
So based on mcarter's comments I think the 10 inch mattresses are out for me, looks like they weigh over 70 lbs! There are Zinus 8 and 6 inch foam mattresses on Amazon for very reasonable prices, with lots of positive reviews. The 8 inch weighs 42 lbs and the 6 inch is 29 lbs. Anyone have comments on either of these?

After using the original mattress a few nights, we had to change as I felt it was almost more comfortable to sleep on the ground than the so-called "mattress" that came with our 177. We purchased the Eurotop mattress (6") a pillowtop style back in 2011 for just over $ 300. Came rolled up like a sausage, just cut the plastic case and stand back while it unfolds before you. This is as comfy as our home mattress and it gets used a fair amount, about 30 days/year and is just as comfortable now as the day we bought it over 7 years ago.

I have a 178, so weight is on tail end, but it is backbreaker putting fitted sheet on 10" mattress.

mcarter, you raise a good point with the weight. I'm already at about 570 lbs tongue weight now fully loaded, the last thing I need is more weight up front in my 179. Sounds like 8 inches is the max I should be thinking about.
Anybody tried 6 inches?
Thanks!

We upgraded to a 8" memory foam( medium firmness)mattress from Camping world, just before the trip we are on. Love it!! Really comfortable, getting a great nights sleep. I think it was around $400.00
Previously we had the original mattress with the memory foam topper also. This is a major improvement.

We went with a firm 10". wish now we had gone with 8". 10" is heavy when making bed. A lot has to do with who is sleeping on it. My wife and I together don't weigh 300 lbs, but we like firm.
