How much wind can my 179 withstand? I'm sure a 60 mph gust won't bother it but what about a sustained blow of 120? Any anchor system I might rig would likely get yanked right out of the ground.

We have been through 60 mph gust with no problem/damage. Can't help with much above that.

We had 70+ MPH last winter when our RP-179 was in the driveway. It's not exactly in the high wind area, but it got a serious dose of wind (it's partially blocked by our house from that direction). We did find a puddle under the fridge afterward. We think it blew in through the vents on the slide out, and ended up on the floor. It actually did better when we had the slide out extended. probably came through the same way, but ended up going straight down to the driveway. I was a bit concerned that it might get blown over, as the wind was coming from the side.

My pod has been behind my TV regularly @ 65 mph and occasionally @ 70-80 mph. That being said, if you are in the path of Florence, I would consider a trip to Disney World or Niagara Falls for the next few days. BTW, if your Pod blows over, it's probably the least of your concerns.

God's speed to all in the path of hurricane Florence. Get the heck out of the way as fast as you can and take your Pod with you. At least its a home you know and like.

Thanks for the reply. I might be hitting the road with it... maybe take it about 6 hours west past Knoxville.

Filling all three holding tanks with water would help to keep it from moving. Having been through several hurricanes living in south Florida for 55 years You can always determine the path the hurricane may take and move your camper close to a strong building on the leeward side if possible. If the eye of the hurricane is passing over you then you will get wind from both directions, if that is the case then I would hitch trailer up and head for Knoxville.

Be aware that wind pressure at 120 mph is 4x what it is at 60, not 2x. Goes up with the square of the speed, not linearly.
A quick calc comes up with about 6000 lbs of wind force at 120 if the wind comes at it from the side. You can pretty much guarantee that well before that point the trailer will slide sideways or if something stops the wheels from sliding it will blow over. Putting water in the tanks wouldn't be enough to stop it. Maybe a few thousand lbs of lead weights ![]() If you've never experience that kind of wind speed its hard to imagine what its like. I have, I live in Hatteras and never want to experience it again. Not fun. So we buttoned up the house and bugged out in our pod Monday. One of the reasons I got it. After clearing the traffic jams we're now in western WV, expecting maybe a bit of rain from it and enjoying the early fall mountain weather. |

Anyone who has sailed before has an understanding of the force of the wind, even when it's blowing only 20knots (24mph+/-). Setting a spinnaker (the brightly colored big sail used to go down wind) can drag/pull a 20,000 lb boat through the water at over 6 knots and it involves thousands of pounds of force on the rigging. A wind of even over 50 mph can cause serious damage as all of you in hurricane and tornado territory can attest.
offgrid's plan to get the heck out of harms way and sit out the storm in W. VA. is very wise. I suspect that when Forest River was trying to come up with a trademark name for the rPod, Escape Pod was one of the names proposed.
