Topic: A WILD week of camping Posted: 20 Aug 2018 at 8:21pm |
We went to a tremendous lake in Arkansas to camp. This is August correct? Arkansas is typically dry.
Arrived Sunday and hot like Arkansas can be.
Monday rain morning and night. Enough window to grill burgers.
Repeat of Monday.
Wednesday campground lost electricity for about 2 hours. High humidity and high temps. Sun out. Got hot fast. We went to town.
Thursday: I was setting outside & noticed a dark cloud approaching. 2 minutes later we had 30-40 mph winds Thule awning was flapping up and down. Got it roll I. With no damage. Our 12x12 tent was moving east. The weights on the post didtheir job but the tent racked before I could get the top off.
Friday hot and muggy and rain. Dogs went crazy. Peed on the bed. They are really good about going out but for some reason they decided otherwise. Trip to the laundromat.
Saturday a good day finally.
Departed Sunday.
I chalked this up to a definite learning experience with Mother Nature. This August in Arkansas could be the wettest on record.

What lake in Ark? Campground?
Looking at Hot Springs area for this fall. Want to get some quartz crystals, do some exploring.
Hoping I can duck november weather here in fargo for nicer weather down there. Probably same again after christmas.
I know mamma is going to want Christmas at home with the Grandkids. They just moved back after 3 years in NC.
Was thinking after New Years we might go take a look at one of those Florida Beaches.

Lake Ouachita. Beautiful lake. Fishing and boating lake. Several hiking trails.
The 2 places we like are Thompkins Bend and Crystal Springs. Both not far from the crystal mines. Crystal Springs is about 12 miles west of Hot Springs and Thompkins Bend about 25. Denby is another that looks good but we have not camped there yet. Avoid Joplin unless you are tent camping. Extremely tight sites and very limited service. Electricity is all that is available at the site. Water you have to carry.
There are several others with electric and water hookup. Most of the site are Corp of Engineer sites. If you have a senior pass they are 50% off posted price.
Google Lake Ouachita and maps will show the camp sites. Lake Hamilton is the closest to HS but highly commercialized. Lake Catherine is a state park not too far away. We have driven through it and some locations are sleep.
Gulpha Gorge is the Nation Park campsite just outside HS on the east side. First come basis. Services available.

We were going to start at Colemans Mine and RV park and explore our way around from there. That is up by Hot Springs Village on the NE side of the lake.
We thought we would take a look at Denby. And there was another on the lake a bit west of there that looked like it might have potential.

If it is Joplin you are looking at I would not recommend it. The campground is tight and only electric. This site has not been kept up like Denby and Thompkins Bend.

Trips like that will help you to appreciate the better trips and something you will look back at and laugh about later.

We definitely made a memory weather wise. Learn a couple of things.
