Anyone have trouble sleeping on stock RPod mattress? Even my college dorm mattress was better. Got a new mattress at home, so modified my former home Serta ICloud Memory Foam mattress to fit my Rpod 179. Bought an electric kitchen knife and sliced off 6 inches of foam to make standard Queen into RV Short Queen. Sliced like buttah, and then hand sewed back up netting. Bought an RV Queen mattress cover and now sleep in bliss on 10" of memory foam.

You are not the first to find the stock mattress to be unsuitable. We tried a mattress topper first and when even that was not enough, replaced the mattress with a Zinus 10" memory foam short queen mattress. If I had it to do over again, I would go for the 8" to save a few pounds and make it easier to move out of the way for getting to the water heater and winterization valves.

+2 went to 10", wish I'd have gone to 8". Bed making is a pain.

We bought a piece of 4" dense foam custom cut for the bed space. My wife made a removable cover with cotton cloth and it couldn't be more comfortable; but, we like a firm bed. It's light weight, comfortable in both the heat and the cold, light weight, and easy to lift to get to the below bed storage. And, it was not expensive. If I recall correctly, I think we paid about $120 for the piece of foam, the cloth for the cover cost about $25, and my wife's labor sewing the zippered cover ----- priceless.

After 3 nights on the stock mattress I said, "no more!" It was already collapsing in the middle. Went online and ordered a Eurotop short queen mattress (a.k.a. mattress in a roll). Been using it for 7 years, still just as comfortable now as it was 7 years ago, a great investment.

I believe the brand is Zinus. 8" memory foam for under $200 and is a queen short. Fits perfectly and is very, very comfortable. I am just finishing a month long trip and it was a great choice to upgrade the mattress.

We just rec'd our 8" Zinus! I took out the Pod mattress but then wondered if I needed to keep it in there? At 225 lbs, I don't want to feel the board like I did with the stock mattress. Wondering your thoughts!
Thanks! |

If you got the Zinus 8" mattress, you won't need the original also. Once you get it in there and it is fully expanded, lie down on it. I think you will find it more than adequate. If you think it isn't, get a mattress topper locally and trim to fit. It will be far better than adding the stock mattress.

We took a pretty radical approach.
Converted the queen to a standard twin/sofa with end table. Then replaced all the foam in the dinette with a much superior foam. I use a Alps mountaineering self inflating pad on the dinette. We use sleeping bags with custom bag liners wife made. This has worked out great for us over many, many nights. It also gives us a slight larger and more comfortable living/lounging space during the day. We have it down to an art and only takes us a few minutes to setup @ night and breakdown in AM. We sleep well and when we had Henry, the camping cat, he loved jumping back and forth between our two beds in the morning. Pics in my sig. fred
