Topic: Bed orientation Posted: 08 Oct 2017 at 10:20am |
We are very interested in getting r-pod (180) but are not happy with the "climb over" each other to get out of the bed. Has any one seen the bed positioned "front to back? Ken

In an R-180, you would have to remove the back dinette seat to make room for it. And then you would only have 7" on either side of the bed. Then there is also the issue of the underbed storage that would eat up a lot of the floor space. If you took another 10" out of the width (50" wide bed), then you "could" end up with a foot on each side, but the underneath storage problem would still exist.
I think you would have to upgrade to a full width trailer to get the bed in the right direction. Hello Lance? Airstream?

There has been a mod done in which the bed is changed to two (almost) twin size beds. The space along the front wall becomes a night table and then each person can get out of bed using the open center space. While you can remove the back of the dinette seat to make the bed longer, the other bed cannot be made longer due to the refrigerator and slide out. There is no other work around I can see for a 6.5 foot wide TT. There are seven foot wide trailers with a front/back orientation but they only have a walk around on one side of the bed so that one person would have to slide straight down to get out of bed. If it is that important to you you should just go with an 8 foot wide TT that has a walk around bed. There are several light ones around that weigh around 3200 lbs. But you definitely need to add side mirror extensions. We do find it an issue since we are seniors and do get up in the middle of the night

Hi, Close neighbor (NJ). Do you have a link to the alteration. How do you like the r-pod. We are looking forward to getting inside one to get a good feel of the space. We were in NJ last week looking inside a Lil Snoozy. Don't think is will do. Ken

By coincidence the post was added to today so just go to the Podmods forum and look for "4th 180 twin twin beds by Voisj. I do not think he liked it and switched back to a a raised bed with installed drawers underneath. We love the RPOD 180 but we bought it as we wanted a light TT that we can tow well with our Jeep Cherokee. We find the lack of storage space, lack of sitting space (not comfortable to watch TV in bed nor sit in the dinette), small refrigerator and no walk around bed makes it unsuitable for long trips. So for the next couple of years we plan on making trips of two weeks or less. Then we will upgrade our TV to a Grand Cherokee and buy a 21-22 ft TT and do the really big cross country trip. Suggest you spend at least 30 minutes in any TT and pretend to do what you would in them and see if there is room. From my unscientific survey most podders are tent/pop up camper upgraders so this is luxury. For us first timers it is just too small and we just need another 1 1/2 ft width and another foot length and it would be perfect. But adding 1000 lbs would not work with the Jeep Cherokee. But for the short trips we have been having a blast with it

I don't know if you are able to get up and in a bunk bed but, for us the 172 solves the climbing over each other problem. Of course you're not able to snuggle!

We converted the bed to a murphy bed, we raised the mattress platform about 5 inches and installed a cheap futon couch under the bed. Before bedtime the mattress is raised up and sitting on the couch is much more comfortable. the couch folds down and the mattress is lowered in about 30 seconds, very easy. I posted pix a while back, you may be able to find them under my profile. This doesn't help with the climbing over issue, just more comfortable while sitting inside watching tv.

Great video and workable if you have one short person who sleeps curled up IMHO. The only fault I see in this fellow mod was where are you going to get the mattress that will fit other then cutting out foam padding? Yes crawling over the over the wife in our 180 was awkward at first but now we pretty much have it figured out and manage without much problem. We wouldn't let this little issue stop us from extended outings.
