We have been researching trip planners for RVing.  There are some dedicated GPS units but we already have several so do not want to buy another GPS unit.  Unfortunately we have not found dedicated RV maps that we can load onto our units.  Then there is a software package called CoPilot for RV from Copilotgps.com.  It is $60 but does not have great reviews.  There is a program that runs on a PC written by full time RVers.  You do not buy the program just access it online for a yearly fee (forgot what that was).  It looks neat.  You say what your gas mileage is and where you want to go and it plots a course and tells you when you will need to stop for gas.  It lists the most campgrounds so whatever you belong to (e,g KOA, Good Sam, Passport America) it has them.  Probably the best one out there but have not tried it.   Search for RV trip wizard.

I tend to use a spreadsheet for the general outline, but I'm a hands-on guy for planning. A few tips though:
- I have found that Bing Maps is helpful in the winter time when Google Maps shows the roads as closed.
- For booking campsites we use recreation.gov and reserveamerica.com, although both are only okay sites.
- I really like alltrails.com for planning hikes. It has great basic access and if you hike or bike alot then the subscription is worth it!
- When I'm booking a campsite I use Google Maps to scope out the site from above and then campgroundphotos.com and campgroundviews.com to help choose the best site.
- On the road, I like Waze as a map app. I like that it routes you around stuff automatically and letsyou in on where the cops are!
- Tripadvisor.com is great for finding some things to do in an area as well as good for reviews.

I wrote a Road Trip Planner app that may interest you.  It's used by many people who travel with trailers.
