Topic: TOMBSTONE, AZ the rest of the story Posted: 24 Jan 2017 at 9:09pm |
Thanks, received the PM, will get back with you after looking at the website...many thanks.
You're right about Sarah Lemmon, my apologies. But somehow the picture of the Lemmon party standing at the peak just isn't as mentally humorous as the juxtaposition of a lone lemon tree sitting atop of the peak at an elevation of 9157', branches spread wide, full of fruit overlooking the vast saguaro desert below to the south and southwest.
On another note, in LA speak, "like hey man you got a really cool jig...translated to English, you are very fortunate to have your avocation as your vocation. You are indeed a fortunate person as too few find themselves there.

Yes, I sent you a private message with a link...
FYI, Mount Lemmon is named after a botanist, Sarah Lemmon who trekked to the summit in the 1800's with her husband and indigenous guides

I was born in the land of the reindeer, uprooted and transplanted into the land of the Mapleleaf & hockey stick. Whose with more wisdom than I got tired of chasing the snowblower down the driveway so they uprooted me from the land of the tundra and transplanted me into the land of palmtree. "like you know...you know", from which I eventually escaped, "dude", to live a more harmonious life.
I'm with you, lizard hopping from creosote bush to bush looking for summertime shade...all good things.
Might you by chance be hanging out on a mountain named after a citrus in the Catalinas where they take some amazing photos formed by ancient photons of light in the dark summer sky that envelopes a blazing hot spiral of light where things go "bump in the night"???

Hummmm!!!! If you are from the land of the maple leaf & the hockey stick we may have had some conversations about the Grand Canyon Starparty about 3 years ago on Cloudy Nights...."it's a small world after all".
Will definitely have to check out Portal.

Yes, I'm on cloudy nights, just don't post a whole lot....I read the observing forums occasionally.
I've been observing from portal 2-3 times per year for about a dozen years...between the mountains and the astronomy, it is one of my favorite places to be.
I've had a home observatory, and I work for the UA dep't of astronomy...so I get a fair amount of telescope time and Portal remains a very special place to me to get away.

20" Obsession! Now that's a chunk of glass and a chunk of change. A friend in Kingman's got one...very nice, pulls in so very faint objects.
7.5 magnitude of darkness must make any clouds in the sky look jet black.
Sounds like it's going to be a great time weather and wind permitting.
Are you a member of Cloudy Nights by chance?

The ethos will be firmly ensconced in everything from a 140mm triplet refractor to, hopefully, a 20" Obsession...and a few others in between...
Check out Portal. Not only is it an international birding destination, but the night skies are magnitude 7.5 at zenith...sometimes darker.

Uh!!! Not familiar with Portal. Sounds like you're going to have a major star party hungover.
If I said Naglers & Ethos make for good eye candy you'd know what I'm talking about.
Happy hunting & viewing

I'll be down there in Portal, AZ, on the SE flank of the Chiricauhua weekend of Feb 23-26. It's new moon and I'll be out with friends and telescopes camped at my buddys property.
Cave creek canyon has some beautiful campgrounds there.
