For years we have often left the trailer coupler attached to the ball if we pull into a campground late and are leaving the next morning.  But, we do make sure the trailer is reasonably level before we lower the tongue jack and the stabilizers.  If the site is far from level, that is another story.  When you consider the height range necessary to attach the WDH, there is normally little chance for damage on a typical camp site.

Doesn't sound good; but not as costly as when I forgot to disconnect the AC before leaving home with the rPod earlier this year. That AC socket is not cheap, and it's no picnic to install.

Rpod is awesome! Owner, not so much...
So yeah, you should disconnect the hitch from the truck before leveling. Good thing is the hitch is damn strong!
