Topic: Attention Florida Campers... Posted: 11 Sep 2013 at 8:50pm |
Thanks for all the input. I'll keep an eye on the water situation and if it's still a problem, I may have to move our reservation.

I promised a report on the conditions at Manatee Springs State Park, so hereit is-
We just returned from two nights and two great days of perfect weather for early September. Daytime hight in the 80's, and into the high 60's at night.
The water situation does in fact merit the precautions mentioned above. The Suannee River is quite high, and the spring head is backed up over the walkways and stairs that normally give swimming access. The woodlands along the spring race are also under water. Our site was at the tip of the loop which is very close to the river to begin with, and the water was no more than 100 yards from our site. No problem, but we chose not to swim in the spring this trip.
No pollution worries.

St. George campground is nice but the island, to my taste, is just too flat. St. Joseph, right up the coast has beautiful beaches and seems more interesting to me.

We have reservations for a quick 2-nighter at Manatee Springs beginning Monday, (9/9).We go there often- it's our "home field"- and we and the pups love everything about it.
I have not heard of the groundwater situation until just now. I assume it is the result of a very rainy summer, the height of the Suannee River, and the resulting possibility of standing water. I will be happy to see what the deal is while we're "on the ground", as well as get an estimate from the Rangers as to it's extent and expected resolution. I'll post our findings when we get back next week.
Here's the link about the contaminated water caution:
It seems that the river water itself suspect.
I can say that the Chiefland Golf Club, where we play and which is about 3 miles up the road, showed no signs of water problems yesterday.

I don't know when you plan to camp at Manatee Springs, but right now they have contaminated groundwater concerns. There is also a notice of certain closures that will be effective in February. You may want to visit this site, if you have not already. http://www.floridastateparks.org/manateesprings/default.cfm

We've stayed at Manatee Springs. Very nice...You'll like it. We've stayed at St. Joseph, but not St. Georges. Both are a bunch sandy...beach type places. If you like sand you'll like either one. Be sure to look for the Manatees at Manatee Springs.

Do you mean Manatee Hammock County Park in Titusville? If so, I have stayed there in the past before we moved here. They have full hookups, a nice swimming pool, fishing pier extending into the Indian River Lagoon, a launch area for smaller boats, and a host of other features. At one time this was a member of the Coast-to-Coast membership chain. It is clean, close to most of the area attractions, etc. We used to stay there a week at a time.

Just finished making reservations at two Florida parks-- Manatee Springs and St. George Island. I've seen these parks mentioned on this forum and was looking for input from anyone who may have visited them. They both look very nice on the website, but first hand knowledge is always the best. Thanks in advance!
