Years ago (around 1975) we had a big old station wagon.  We went to Anastasia Island (St. Augustine Beach) and were assigned a site right on the beach.  At the time we had 3 young children and a pop-up and ended up stuck in the sand while backing up into our site.  Now, after living in Florida for 11 years, we know the different types of sand and avoid camping where there is "sugar" sand.  I imagine Florida campgrounds have learned from past mistakes and offer beachfront camping only on firmer sand.

Can't give you much help on Henderson Beach. You know, it's right in my backyard so I've never been there. We drive by it all the time, but have only stopped once. It looks fine from the road and on the Web site. Water and electric hookups. There is some low scrub vegetation, but it's really an open beach park. I'm not a beach person so I haven't look too closely, but if you are looking for a nice beach stay and close to lots of tourist stuff Henderson should be fine.

Charlie-  Thanks for the review!  We have been to Silver River and agree wholeheartedly.  Did you hike to
the River boat launch?  (I wouldn't want to haul my own canoe or kayak that far!)

We had Rainbow Springs on our "short list", but now I think we'll just do the springs as a day trip.

Now the real thanks for the Stephen Foster CC heads up.  We just reserved for three days in December.
I swear I was unaware that they had camping available-  I must have mis-read the web site.  We are
really looking forward to the light festival.  Thanks!

Just returned from a 1150 mile trip around North and Central Florida. Four state parks:

Ochlockonee: Unhappy Wet and swampy. Maybe a different time of year.

Silver River: Approve Very nice. Water, electric, no sewer, nice pull through or back-ins.

Rainbow Springs: Unhappy Nothing special. Older campground originally commercial. Close spacing. Springs and waterfalls require driving to separate entrance.

Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center: Approve Nice, new, electric, water, no sewer. Wide spaced and treed sites. Interesting  museum, carillon tower. Pull through and back-ins. Festival of lights in December.

Toilet seal failed (would not hold water) but got it replaced under warranty by  non-FR dealer in Lakeland, FL. One Pod sighted, but it was for sale on a residential lawn; none in campgrounds or on the road.
