In the picture you can see the pressure relief valve lever is up, I opened that and water faucets inside the trailer before unscrewing the anode rod. Lift relief valve slowly, probably get a little water or spray out it. Flip it back down when you know there is no more pressure.

I prefer to open the pressure relief valve when getting ready to take out the anode because moving it a bit helps dislodge the crud that can build up around it and cause it to seat poorly when closed. But, opening any hot and cold water valve will certainly keep you from getting squirted when you remove the anode.

Or you can just open a hot water tap to depressurize. Open a cold one too.

Just be sure to open the pressure relief valve before you turn the socket to take the anode out. I figured that my tank was not pressurized after sitting for 6 months. Wrong. Both the anode rod and the socket wrench wound up about 10 feet away in the gravel and I was drenched with cold water from the waist down. Lucky I was standing some to the side.......

I think you have found the only way to clean the tank out but I might suggest that you remove both the anode rod and the pressure relief valve and then you can put the pressurized water from the hose into the relief valve opening of the HW tank while the crud and water is coming out of the anode rod opening. While the water is coming out of the anode rod opening you also can use a screw driver to help get the big chunks out. This works well for me. Hope it helps once a year.

The skinny pipe attachment, whether homemade or the one that you can buy which has a bend in the end so you can aim it around the tank, is probably the best way to flush out the debris. You could try threading in a hose to the pressure relief valve and flushing it through that. Then the bottom opening would be free to let the water and debris flow out unimpeded. I have not checked to see whether the end of the pressure relief valve is threaded though.

Just a side anode story,
I replaced mine yesterday after 3 years, It was 90% gone and there was an inch of white/green scaling debris at the bottom of the tank. I made a skinny pipe attachment for my garden hose and it took over a half hour to get it clean. I now plan to clean it once a year. Anyone found a good way to clean the tank? thanks, John

Thanks for that advice. I cleaned out the remaining Teflon tape visible in the back of the anode rod fitting. It could come loose and float around in the hot water system until it got caught up in a filter or valve somewhere. If that is a concern food grade anti seize paste on threaded fittings like this avoids use of Teflon tape.

That's looking pretty good. Still has a lot of life left in it.
Tip: Be really careful when reinserting it/screwing it back in...due to the weight of the rod it's easy to cross-thread it as it wants to tip downward.

Here is a picture of my water heater anode, I bought the trailer in June and have used it about 8 weeks in the past 6 months. I had another trailer with a water heater and replaced the anode after two years. This anode is a little more corroded than I expected after 6 months, I will check it again in the spring. i plan on using the trailer during the winter about the same amount. i
