Topic: Weston Bend State Park, MO Posted: 18 May 2011 at 7:48am |
We do summer hiking in the Rockies as well as around the midwest, and they do protect his feet. I love to hike, but I don't think it would be fun for Louie or me to carry his 60 pounds 10 miles down a rocky mountain trail if he injured his paws. He tolerates them just fine (after the 1st one or two minutes) and really seemed to appreciate them in last winters ice and snow. He didn't need them at Weston Bend as the trails are asphalt or leaf covered dirt through the forest.

Louie's boots look almost exactly like the kind the Iditarod dogs wear to save their feet from getting cut up in the ice and snow!

Louie (being a rescue dog, we are not certain) is around 10.5. He keeps young, just like we do by hiking all over the place. He even has his own hiking boots:

We spent the weekend at Weston Bend State Park, north of Kansas City, at the Audubon Society's "Wings over Weston" festival. Marvelous park, good hiking and biking, and during the migratory times of spring and fall, there is an amazing variety of birds not usually seen in this area. Every time I visit this park I am more impressed. It is not a park to just drive through, one would see nothing of interest, but when one gets out and walks the trails and watches the forest canopy, it is simply amazing.
There is also a paved trail that we took to walk to the main street of Weston, MO (a pre-Civil War town, and a campsite of the Corps of Discovery in July, 1804), about 1.5 miles, pretty flat and nice, as opposed to the biking trail which has some very steep hills (a strenuous, but healthy walk).
Here is a link to pictures of the pod, the park and the festival:
