Living at the south end of the OBX we have to decide very early if we're leaving or staying in the event of a hurricane. Its a 70 mile ride up the island before we can even begin to head inland, so when they call for an evac you're in for a day of traffic or worse. Now that I'm retired and my wife can work remotely as long as we have a 4G mobile connection we just button up the house, park our street car on high ground, bug out a couple of days early and go camping in the mountains somewhere. Worst thing is we might get a day or two of rain in the mountains. We do risk not being able to get back for a long time if the road gets washed out but its better than the alternative.

Welcome to the forum have lived in south Florida for over 50 years and understand the difficulties of trying to get out of the path of a hurricane. It is nice to get a head start before others and having a camper makes it a lot easier. We were just down near you last January in DeLand visiting family. For the past three years have lived in Tennessee. Hope you enjoy your r-pod 172 and have many safe camping trips.

Thanks for the warm welcome.  No, I'm not in the panhandle (east coast north of St Augustine) but the pod as a hurricane escape pod has definitely crossed my mind.  Folks in the rest of the country don't always realize but evacuating from here and knowing where to go is harder than it seems.  Where I am you have to leave before the path is sure, by that time you can't get out (traffic from the whole state is on the highway by my house) and there''s nowhere to go.  Many friends have left here to go into Georgia and had the storm turn toward their evacuation spot. The Pod makes me mobile if I get out ahead of the traffic. Anyway, very nice to meet you all; I couldn't be more excited about this adventure.

Welcome to the forum.  I suppose now you have a great escape Pod in the event of a hurricane.  Hope you enjoy it and gain as much from the discussions on this board as the rest of us have.

Welcome to the forum!  I'm guessing you are not Panhandle?  We've spent several of the past Christmas/New Year at TH Stone State Park, now indefinitely out of commission due to Michael.  It was a really nice park.

Welcome Julie and congratulations on your 172.  We have so enjoyed our 177 for the past 8 years.  My wife, Diane is quite the seamstress and has done numerous mods using her sewing skills.  You sound like you are doing the same, and loving it.  Enjoy yourself this year and ask away on this forum is questions arise, there are many here who have a lot of skills, from sewing to mechanical and electrical.  Also, if you haven't done so already, check out the FB side of the rpod owners, a ton of activity going on there on a daily basis.

Hello and welcome! RPods are fun to camp in and fun to do mods with. I've made a number to our 179 (see link in signature). It looks like you are off to a great start. I hope you have many fun adventures and make many great memories doing so. Thumbs Up

Hi everyone,

I'm Julie and I just made my first camping trip to Crooked River State Park with my new-to-me 172 (2016). I'm lovin' the pod.  Doing some mods to make it a little more functional....plus sewing new pillow and cushions.  I live in North Florida but I grew up camping in Maine as a kid.  I'm pulling my R-Pod with a BMW x-3 that I bought just to get a camper (hated to give up lose the sweet little rag top).

Next trip in ten days or so to Anastasia State Park; can't wait!  Nice to meet you all.
Julie
