Topic: Water Heater on Propane. Posted: 31 Aug 2018 at 8:49am |
Lost, that sounds like exactly what I bought. And I bought several.
Found the 12 v wires leading to furnace. :)
Got a bit warm out there yesterday so we took it a bit easy.
But the list of things that need doing before we can go is getting quite short.
I do still need to hook up the mopar break controller in my Jeep. Install the back up camera. Yes I sprung for one of these. Price was reasonable. And I can set it up so it is on all the time, lets me know when it is safe to do a lane change, etc.
Need to test the TV yet. But the little stereo works fine.

There is a constant hot running to the heater.. It was 8 years ago.. t h e f o g.... LOL
Sorry, I am sure I have a picture somewhere.. but Photobucket killed my mod files and I have not finished rebuilding them.. But going to the heater are the small wires from the thermostat, and the large 12v supply wires, I just squeeze tapped into those.

Congratulations on getting your hot water.
As for your 12v plug issue. We added a 12v circuit with USB plugs, a standard 12v plug (cigarette lighter), and a meter to it's own dedicated circuit. The 12v panel had two empty fuse slots so I use one for the USB charger. I used a 15 amp fuse and 12 awg wire and can plug a small inverter that I happened to already have to run things like our Mac or other low power AC devices.

WE HAVE A WATER HEATER!
Flipped the switch, by the time I reached the outside I could HEAR it running, feel the heat.
You guys ROCK!
Furpod which wire did you use?
I also installed a 12v plugin with 2 uSB ports over the left side of the sofa near the kitchen slide out.
I kinda cheated, used power from the light in center, used a coat hanger to make a channel for the wire. First went to the speaker (That was an easy no brainer) then to just short of the wall where I will mount it on ceiling. Hole saw to make 2 nice big holes. Fishing the wire took a little time but really was not that hard. I just bent the end of my coat hanger into a hook, hooked a piece of Paracord on it, pulled it back through. Then pulled wire back with the paracord.

Tommorow will go out with wife have her turn switch on while I observe.
On the good news side, sounds like an easy fix. Also on good news side, this is the last real hurdle.
We slept in the pod in our driveway last night. Good trial run.
Bit cool out, but we were snug as could be.
Have a few idea's on tweaking things.
Need to get the mattress up, find a good 12 v source (thinking furnace) and get one of my 12 v plug in's with dual USB ports installed in that part of the pod. Will probably install it close to the 110v plug in. There is a little shelf there just right for a cell phone on dock. Which would give us clock and a bit of light.
Thanks all.
John, brand new 189, so no bugs yet but thanks for the reminder to screeen everything.

I would recommend doing the following. Have someone inside, turn on the water heater switch while you are outside with the vent cover open. When switch turns on, Do you smell propane ? yes/no. Do you hear a clicking sound ? yes/no. If you smell propane, but it doesnt light, you have an ignition problem and everything else is good. Next I would remove the small circuit board that is attached to the water heater, either under the bed or dinette. (it's usually wire tied or some really chincy way to the unit. Bring that board to the dealer to test. It might be inside a small box like enclosure. As far as do you have water in the water tank, Pull the emergency pressure release valve up, and if water squirts out, you have water

Look inside the HWH where the flame would be. Is there something like an insect nest or spider web?

The switch outside the RPOD in the heater compartment is for 120v heat only. A good test of the heater is to hook up to shore power, run water through the lines to make sure the 6 gal heater tank is full, turn on the electric switch and you should have hot water. Yes you need to turn on the water pump to get that hot water to run through the faucet if you are not connected to city water and are using the water from your fresh water tank. If that works, then shut everything down and attempt to use the propane again by only turning on the hot water from the inside switch. A little red light should come one as it tries to light and will go off when lit. If it does not light the unit will make two more attempts to light. If the water heater does not come on the light will stay lit. You can use only electricity to heat the water if you are camping with electric hookup. But if boondocking you are out of luck and need to run on propane. Ours broke while on a trip and had to be repaired under warranty but I do not know what was wrong with the propane part of the system while the 120v worked fine. It seems it is not uncommon to have the propane part break.

WH does not need the pump on. No pressure sensor. It does require 12VDC so you do need a charged battery connected. The little black switch inside WH compartment is only for 120V operation and has no effect on gas operation. Turn on the wall switch inside the Pod. Note that ON is down. The red light should illuminate for a few seconds until the burner lights. If the light never lights I'd guess there is no 12V to the heater. Check fuses/wiring/connectors. If the red light comes on and never goes out there is a problem in the gas flow or the igniter is not working. Near the heater you should be able to hear the igniter trying. It will time out after about 3 tries, leaving the red light on.
EDIT: Sorry Furpod. I can't read and write at the same time
