I couldn't locate the antenna post that is on bigger rv's so I made a pvc extention about 30 inches high. That really pulls in a lit mire stations but is a pain in the butt to put up and down.
So I figurr if I have something I can erect from the ground it will be easier. |

My Wineguard TV antenna is powered from the wall plate, it has 12 volts DC going to it. The cable going to the antenna is grounded thru the outer braid. TV antennas are receive only so do not require a ground plane. Your TV antenna at home is required to grounded and bonded for lighting protection. The trailer antenna is not going draw lighting to it like your house antenna. To get the best reception of digital TV signals, you need to be clear of anything that can shadow the signal, like an air conditioner (that's the problem I have). The only fix is to have it higher in the air, but them you have to be careful when you go under things.

Antennas like that generally require a ground plane in order to work in the first place. If you look, you'll probably find the outside shield in the coax grounded somewhere. It's not for safety; it's for function.

So, what would be a useful ground? Would a one foot copper rod be enough? I'm not saying it's a bunch of bunk. Grounds are good.
How could you easily ground and be able to take it with you at the end of your stay? |

I think it may possibly be related to The National Electrical Code. Which simply says outdoor antennas have to be safe. Which would include possible lightning strike and/or static build-up which could provide a shock. On the batwing the coax is grounded, to a degree. There is no reference specifically to height in the code, there is much verbage about ground provider systems.

Why would one need to ground an antenna mounted on a pole off the spare tire rack but the batwing is not grounded? I'm anout to put a better antenna on the pod and the Facebook site insinuated that an antenn of that type should be grounded. Is it just because it's up higher?
