Topic: Cold Weather Package? Posted: 15 Mar 2016 at 7:54pm |
Hi to all,
My wife and i just returned from our first extended trip in our A-liner type camper (a Chalet), we were gone for 4 weeks. We're both retired now and will likely make similar trips yearly and we're looking at R-Pods for some more comfort and amenities. We first saw them at dealerships in the Carolina's while driving back to far northern NY.
Today, we visited a local dealer to explore. This dealer keeps prices pretty high and explains that they have cold weather packages and other add ons that southern dealers would not. According to him, the cold weather package has to do with underfloor insulation and (hard to believe) some type of under floor heat. He said this with a straight face, so thought I'd post to see if there's anything to this. I've done some searching and can't find any references to cold weather packages. Is there anything to this?
Thanks in advance, this seems like a great community of folks.

Welcome, I have heard of some trailers such as Lancers and air streams that have cold weather packages, but have never heard of that option with the R-pods, and we are on our second one.

Leo's right, it's not something seen before, and it's not a factory option. The dealer would have to install something themselves. Maybe it's a "value add" that dealer likes to do since they're up north. But you'd need to make them prove it.

I have never read anything about a cold weather package. We ordered ours 3 years ago and there was no such option. All the tanks hang below the floor and are exposed to the elements. Even heating strips couldn't prevent freeze-ups. There is no option for enclosing the tanks, as would be necessary for cold temps. Some people have modified their pods (do a search).

No. Just NO. There is no such thing and no such option.
Find another dealer if your heart is set on a Pod, or for that matter, ANYTHING this guy sells.
If like us, 4 season capabilities has become important to you, I suggest Lance.

Thanks,
This really did not pass the smell test for me so thanks for confirming. I'm ok with wearing a pair of socks if the floor feels cold.

I think you would do us all a favor by listing this dealership and the town it is located in so we can all AVOID it. Would be especially helpful to those who live in our around New York so they can reference this and take notice. Thanks for sharing this with us.

I agree, look elsewhere. And also don't be shy about going out of state. We took a price from a dealer 2 states away and got our local Camping World to match it. That said - I don't have much love for CW.

The dealer is flat out lying. We live in MA where it hit -14F last month, so if such an option existed we would have definitely gotten it. The floors on the Rpod are insulated, putting heating elements on the outside of the cabin would be useless they added another layer of external insulation over it. To add underfloor heating (aka radiant floor heating) they would have to rip up the flooring tiles to accomplish it, and FR would never agree to letting a dealer do that.
