I saw this video of towing/trailering mishaps, and thought it might be a reminder of things you do NOT want to be doing when pulling your R-pod. In all the cases in the video, someone is pulling (1) too big a trailer for their TV, (2) going too fast, (3) pulling stupid stunts, or (4) some combination of those. Just a wake up call to all of us. |

Sobering is right! Wow. I've seen so many big rigs fly by me on the highway. I want to stay clear of them even more now.

I don't know, #2 just looks like a crosswind caught it.

Wow! I noticed the most if not all of the RV's did not have equalizer hitches. Several were wind related and others passing trucks Another reason was stupidity. Short wheel base with long RV's, high speed. Lack of experience. Many reasons Crankster78

Many of the incidents were in Australia. European and (I presume) Australian hitches are not the same as US hitches. I don't think I ever saw a receiver for a hitch when I was in Germany. Most of what I saw were just ball hitches with no provision for sway control. We don't know all the circumstances of these crashs. Having been in one with our R-Pod, sometimes they are unavoidable (like #2). Ours was a combination of ice and a strong cross-wind. I limit my speed to 60 mph or less. I could not conceive of driving 70 or 75 mph while towing. At 60 mph, I arrive much more relaxed than when I tried towing faster. Even 65 mph is not comfortable. That being said, most of these were avoidable but the driver made a series of poor choices that led to the accident. I suspect loading was a factor in some of the sway situations. It is likely there was too little tongue weight.

+1. The vast majority of these were sway related. Sway shouldn't be a problem if the tow vehicle and trailer are correctly sized, the trailer is properly loaded, sway control is in use, and the rig is driven responsibly. |

+1 to offgrid and GlueGuy. Also of note there was some pretty aggressive driving in many of these crashes. Failure to yield, unsafe lane changes, excessive speed, and a basic lack of courtesy in driving.

As a truck local truck driver I am going to say that most are from over speed. That's why in some states they give speed limit for regular traffic and a limit for trucks and vehicles pulling trailers. I am never in a hurry when I am pulling any type of trailer, myself and my family depend on me getting back home in one piece.

It is always better to arrive slower and alive than dead and in a box.
